Senate Greenlights Measure to Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by the president and his Republican allies. The White House gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Future Action

The bill next goes to Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Although Trump has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the official management of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a House gallery, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he worried the measure would disclose identifying details of individuals involved, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
