Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
